The Position
The Associate Strategic Alliances-State Government Affairs Director sits within the State Government Affairs Team. This individual will coordinate with State Government Affairs Regional Leads to develop, align, and execute strategic state alliance engagement plans. Additionally, this role will monitor and analyze state legislation, regulation, and policy across assigned states. The position integrates alliance development expertise with state policy acumen to proactively identify emerging policy opportunities and risks, build strategic relationships, and advance Novo Nordisk's enterprise objectives. Will work collaboratively with policy and operations colleagues to monitor legislation and policy in assigned states. Collaborates, where appropriate, with Market Access Account Executives and Field Sales staff to implement state strategies that promote the Novo Nordisk brand and/or issues and/or relationships in the states within assigned region. Oversee activities of contract lobbyists in several states in the assigned region.
Relationships
Reports to the Team Lead Government Affairs, State. External relationships include but are not limited to: Governors, state legislators, state agencies (Health, Medicaid, Insurance Commissioners), advocacy associations, trade organizations (PhRMA, BIO),coalitions, contract lobbyists, and consultants. May be required to develop new relationships and alliances to address multistate policy challenges. Internal relationships include State Government Affairs, Alliance Development, Legal, Compliance, Sales, Market Access Strategy, Rare Disease, and Medical. Collaborates with Market Access colleagues and may coordinate with Field Sales and other internal NNI stakeholders to implement state strategies that promote Novo Nordisk interests or relationships in the States and to support patient access to Novo Nordisk products.
Essential Functions
- Develop and implement state-specific alliance engagement strategies aligned with NNI business priorities and goals
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with external associations and advocacy organizations
- Coordinate cross-functional projects with Alliance Development and SGA teams
- Educate and communicate with external stakeholders on policy positions
- Track state legislation, regulation, and emerging policy trends
- Analyze policy risks and opportunities to support advocacy strategies
- Maintain political intelligence and brief internal stakeholders
- Advocate with key state policymakers on legislative and regulatory initiatives
- Manage and direct contract lobbyists in assigned states
- Ensure compliance with state lobbying and ethics requirements
- Develop proactive and reactive strategies to advance NNI policy priorities
- Create and manage business plans aligned with enterprise priorities
- Lead cross-functional working groups on policy objectives
- Prepare materials and briefings for senior leadership
- Cultivate relationships with policymakers, advocacy partners, and organizations
- Develop new alliances to address multi-state policy challenges
Physical Requirements
20-30% overnight travel required - ; Driver must maintain a valid driver’s license. Must be in good standing by not exceeding the Novo Nordisk points threshold assigned based on review of Motor Vehicle Records.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree required; Advanced Degree a plus
- 10+ years of relevant business experience; Pharmaceutical/healthcare industry experience preferred
- Knowledge of Novo Nordisk’s therapeutic areas and marketplace preferred
- Knowledge of state government affairs and public policy, including policy analysis and government relations. Work with external stakeholder groups or alliance development experience preferred
- Strong planning, relationship building, cross-functional team and leadership skills required
- Demonstrated ability to proactively strategize on how best to advance policy priorities
- Ability to effectively deliver information, and explain, advocate and negotiate positions and issues to a broad spectrum of individuals required
- Ability to work under tight deadlines, with little or no supervision required
- Demonstrated track record of strong advocacy and communications skills
- Demonstrated analytical skills to understand key components of legislation and policy
- Proven track record of effective strategic planning, execution and follow up
- Results-focused prior track record required
- Strong interpersonal and communications style with ability to convey passion about Novo Nordisk and our company 's public policy goals; ability to generate excitement and enthusiasm among internal and external audiences
- Travel required, including to NNI’s Princeton or Washington DC offices
The base compensation range for this position is $152,700 to $267,300. Base compensation is determined based on a number of factors. This position is also eligible for a company bonus based on individual and company performance.
Novo Nordisk offers long-term incentive compensation and/or company vehicles depending on the position's level or other company factors.
