About the Department

The Strategy & Rare Disease (STARS) organization drives the long-term strategic direction of Novo Nordisk Inc. (NNI)/North America Operations (NAO) and leads all US commercial efforts for Novo Nordisk’s Rare Disease portfolio. The mandate of STARS is to facilitate the development and to coordinate the execution of the long-term strategy, defining a sustainable business model in US beyond a 5-year time horizon. This department serves as the insiders of the US market when informing and help shaping upstream decisions around future investments and assets. The Rare Disease portfolio includes products in the hemophilia and growth disorders therapeutic areas, new products in the pipeline, and products acquired through business development efforts in existing and new areas. The STARS team collaborates and partners with groups across NAO, Research & Early Development, Development, innovation hubs across NN, other affiliates, and global. The Position

The Director – NPC and 5D will oversee, coach and develop a team of individuals leading commercialization of assets from T-3 years to launch in Rare Disease. This individual will provide oversight to team members to ensure development and implementation of pipeline assets delivering US strategic direction and business plans for successful launches. They will lead the team to develop and implement effective pre-launch and launch plans to maximize the value of the pipeline asset (revenues at time of launch, long term share growth). Influences and aligns key stakeholders, including Global Brand Team, Global Medical, Project VPs, Novo Nordisk Inc (NNI) cross-functional teams and executive management. The Director is also accountable for the development and execution of strategy and marketing plans for 5D including connected devices and digital therapeutics, diagnostics for rare disease.

 

Relationships

Reports to Senior Director, Rare Disease Marketing and responsible for providing leadership to direct reports. This role works closely with Rare Disease Marketing leads to seek input into strategy and gain commercialization plan alignment. Other internal relationships include those with Medical, Sales, Regulatory, Legal, Market Access, Global Marketing, Global Medical and Project VPs. External relationships include relations with key thought leaders and professional services vendors.

 

Essential Functions

  • New Product Commercialization and 5D
    • Oversees the development of the US Pre-Launch and Launch Strategic and Tactical Plans
    • Collaborate with cross functional stakeholders including global and HQ to inform and co-develop key global planning documents, e.g., Product Development Plan, Target Product Profile and Early commercialization plans
    • Lead US commercial team efforts to represent the US perspective and ensure launch readiness
    • Work closely with the PVPs, global marketing and medical team and by participating on global Extended Brand Teams and Early Commercialization
    • Fully understand key disease dynamics, market potential, and competitive landscape in order to develop business cases and inform Long Term Forecasting and AB
    • Plans, initiates and implements market shaping strategies for assigned products and build cross-stakeholder alignment
    • In collaboration with Regulatory, supports BLA submission, label negotiations and ensure optimal label for pipeline assets
    • Interfaces with key US and Global stakeholders, including Global Marketing, PVPs, Regulatory, Supply Chain, and Medical Affairs to manage and resolve business-critical issues
    • Lead innovation efforts to support rare blood and endocrine portfolios with solutions that wrap around our brands
    • Ensure launch readiness of diagnostic offerings, digital therapeutics and device advancements to ensure successful launches
    • Provides leadership oversight in ensuring the effective alignment of digital health tactics across the various customer segment marketing activities to drive business objectives
  • Launch Strategy
    • Develops Strategic and Tactical launch plans and ensures alignment with Marketing leadership, cross-functional stakeholders and Global teams
    • Collaborates and coordinates with global launch office
    • Leads cross-functional launch teams to ensure launch readiness - Holds monthly meetings to review scorecards, process and key actions with teams
    • Leads Product Supply discussions with US and Global Product Supply Team to ensure alignment on Product shipment and order qualities
    • As the internal lead on the Launch Tracker, manages the assessment of the product launch and identifies KPIs and deploys the plan to ensure success of the product launch
    • Maintains project management discipline to manage launch activities towards high quality deliverables, and preparing or coordinating preparation of team meeting agenda and discussion materials
    • Responsible for all Rare Disease product launches
    • Responsible for project management and coordination including overall ownership, monitoring and tracking of the launch plans as well as team budget management, development and compilation of dashboard metrics for both NNI and Global Marketing
    • Responsible for successful scenario planning, risk and mitigation planning
    • Works with Field Sales to ensure marketing programs are developed that strongly support the direct and indirect needs with customers
  • Launch Office
    • Collaborates, engages and influences NNI core teams and HQ organization
    • Leads cross-functional launch teams to ensure launch readiness
  • Project Management
    • Drives prioritization of US launch timing and investments for pipeline assets
    • Influences and aligns global teams, including Global Product Team, to ensure that US market needs and critical success criteria are incorporated into global strategic, tactical and investment plans
    • Identifies new and creative solutions to overcome project challenges, including launch timing, supply availability and resource constraints
    • Briefs and aligns executive management and key Global stakeholders (e.g., PDComm, GPT, Global Marketing)
    • Drives strategic initiatives such as LAP (Launch Activity Plan) involving and coordination between core team and extended NNI teams to gather, assimilate and develop Launch Plan
    • Establishes, monitors and reports on KPIs and performance metrics for launch activities
    • Responsible for managing US and central funding budget across Rare Disease and reports to NNI/Global Marketing and HQ
    • Responsible for ensuring solid analysis and recommendation for Executive-level inquiries, analysis and initiatives
    • Transfer best practices and learnings from one launch to next

 

Physical Requirements

30-40% overnight travel required.

 

Development of People

Ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process. Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.

 

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree required; an advanced degree preferred
  • A minimum of twelve (12) years' relevant marketing, new product and sales, product management experience, demonstrating a steady career progression with increasing roles of responsibility within the pharmaceutical industry
  • Proven track record of effective strategic planning, execution and follow up
  • At least two (2) years of people management experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills in leading cross-functional teams required
  • Excellent presentation/communications skills required
  • Proven track record of innovative market shaping accomplishments/high impact results (based on metrics/ROI)
  • Solid understanding of the marketplace and competition, preferably within rare disease
