About the Department
The Strategy & Rare Disease (STARS) organization drives the long-term strategic direction of Novo Nordisk Inc. (NNI)/North America Operations (NAO) and leads all US commercial efforts for Novo Nordisk’s Rare Disease portfolio. The mandate of STARS is to facilitate the development and to coordinate the execution of the long-term strategy, defining a sustainable business model in US beyond a 5-year time horizon. This department serves as the insiders of the US market when informing and help shaping upstream decisions around future investments and assets. The Rare Disease portfolio includes products in the hemophilia and growth disorders therapeutic areas, new products in the pipeline, and products acquired through business development efforts in existing and new areas. The STARS team collaborates and partners with groups across NAO, Research & Early Development, Development, innovation hubs across NN, other affiliates, and global. The Position
The Rare Bleeding Therapeutic Area Lead is instrumental in shaping and executing NNI's strategic direction and initiatives within the TA. This role is responsible for guiding product development and commercialization strategies for late stage and in-line assets within the TA to maximize brand and portfolio performance as well as improving customer experience. It is a key driver of growth, differentiation, standard setting, establishing and elevating a proactive leadership position in a competitive market landscape. The role requires strategic thinking and leadership at the therapy area and brand level and model an enterprise mindset while influencing functional leaders to align to the enterprise vision for the TA. This role also contributes to the global TA strategy by working closely with global marketing and medical leaders. Embody NN leadership behaviors, embracing innovation, leadership over process, empowerment and the value of time.
This role will also establish and build capabilities and oversee the leader of the thought leader liaisons that will progress our Novo Nordisk thought leadership in Rare Bleeding and ensure intentional partnerships are established advancing our collaborations with KOLs.
Relationships
Reports to Rare Disease Commercial Strategy and Marketing Head and is key contributor to the Rare Disease Commercial Strategy and Marketing Leadership team. Responsible for providing interface with key internal and external stakeholders. Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including Feld Sales, Marketing, Strategic Partnership and Engagement, Medical Affairs, Market Access and Public Affairs (MAPA), Portfolio Strategy, Commercial Excellence, Regulatory Affairs, and other relevant NNI departments to ensure alignment of therapy area objectives and strategies.
This role will oversee leaders of the Hemophila A, Hemophilia B, Inhibitors and Ultra-Rare Bleeding Disorders TAs as well as leader of Thought Leader Liasions, 5D and Culture Roles.
Essential Functions
- Integrated Strategy, Planning, Performance and Tracking
- Develop and execute the Rare Bleeding commercial strategy aligning with overall company objectives, ensuring alignment between marketing, medical and market access
- Monitor financial performance metrics, ensuring revenue targets are met or exceeded
- Define key performance metrics and establish mechanisms for tracking and reporting on the effectiveness of Rare Bleeding marketing strategies and initiatives
- Monitor and evaluate key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to track progress against therapy area goals, providing regular updates to leadership.
- Portfolio Management
- Defines what needs to be true to meet therapeutic area objectives and how those components will be executed. Makes trade off choices to maximize customer centricity across the Rare Bleeding TA
- Commercialization Strategy
- Support development of the therapy area/brand value story and positioning to maximize launch through clinical evidence, and an in-depth understanding of the competitive landscape, market research, historical products, and payer landscape
- Lead market development and unbranded activities for the TA
- Market Opportunity Sizing and Forecasting
- Inform forecast including baseline assumptions, market scenarios as well as risks and mitigation strategies
- Lead decisions around resource allocation and account planning to support forecast and product expectations
- Market and Customer Experience Mapping
- Facilitate TA market analysis, competitor assessment, market sizing, and customer experience insights to shape strategic decisions and plans, being agile to adjust as new insights become available
- Marketing and Commercialization Strategy
- Accountable for defining an insights-driven customer (HCP/patient) experience strategy within the therapy area that translates strategy into seamless customer experience across channels and segments
- Oversee tactical plans to support the engagement strategy 5D
- Lead innovation efforts to support the portfolio with solutions that wrap around our brands
- Ensure launch readiness of diagnostic offerings, digital therapeutics and device advancements to ensure successful launch
- Provide leadership oversight in ensuring effective alignment of digital health tactics across the various customer segments to drive business objectives
- TA Strategy Oversight
- Oversee objectives and strategy, driving integrated marketing initiatives to maximize impact and commercial success across the TA
- Marketing Innovation
- Reimagine marketing through a customer experience lens to drive a focus on a human-centric, insight-driven strategy
- Leverage data, insights and best practices to optimize brand performance and patient outcomes
- Product Evolution
- Oversee product strategy and regulatory activities related to new clinical data or label changes. Lead modification to marketing strategies to encompass product related changes
- Supply Strategy
- In partnership with our Finance and Operations Supply Chain, drive commercial Rare Bleeding supply strategy under a patient lens and understand downstream implications and impact on other cross functional groups or other brands
- Thought Leadership
- Build the Thought Leader Liaison capability to expand footprint and market impact in Rare Bleeding
- Foster strong relationships with external customers and establish significant thought leadership
- Establish a TLL strategy for Rare Bleeding Disorders
- Develop and implement engagement strategies that align with the Rare Disease business unit's strategic priorities, including setting objectives, defining tactics, and allocating resources for TLLs
- Facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange between internal stakeholders and external partners, including thought leadership to address unmet needs
- Work with all external-facing Rare Disease leadership roles to ensure a unified and cohesive approach towards external engagement that prioritizes robust partnerships with different external stakeholders (e.g Field Sales, Medical and Strategic Partnership and Engagement)
- Allocate resources effectively to support outreach goals and objectives
- Set KPIs and metrics of success for engaging and tracking progress towards objectives
- Align field force efforts with marketing strategies partnering on implementation, training and execution of pull through activities
- Ensure TLL team shares robust insights to advance strategic approach
- Ensure TLLs develop comprehensive business, account and customer plans and implements associated tactics
- Ensure all staff have sufficient training, management coaching and resources to successfully reach their targets
- Implement target lists, call planning and other key metrics for the TLLs and ensure consistent execution of agreed upon metrics
- Understand customer needs and ensure that there is a clear plan to incorporate the needs into successful brand strategies
- Evaluate appropriate use of resources to ensure attainment of goals

Approximately 30-40% overnight travel.
Development Of People
Supervisory. Ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process.
Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.
Qualifications
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred
- 12+ years of pharmaceutical experience, including demonstrated history in product strategy and marketing required
- 5+ years of people management experience required, with a proven track record of development and coaching
- Launch experience required
- Experience with Rare Disease preferred
- Strong knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, including regulations, market dynamics, and trends, especially within TA preferred
- Proven success in developing strategy through expert understanding of market and industry
- Experience developing and executing successful therapy area level strategies that drive business results and achieve organizational objectives
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with ability to influence senior leaders and collaborate with cross-functional teams across the organization
- Strategic Planning, Execution and follow-through skills
- Proven track record of innovative market shaping accomplishments/high impact results (based on metrics/ROI)
- Ability to manage complexity, including the leadership of work across competing priorities
