The Position

Responsible for oversight of financial reporting, general accounting, related internal controls, and establishment of financial policies for Novo Nordisk Inc (NNI) in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Novo Nordisk AS (NNAS) accounting guidelines. Provides stewardship over the Company’s assets and offers support on accounting and finance matters to the VP, Finance & Supply Chain and SVP Finance and Operations and across the organization.

 

Relationships

Reports to the VP of Finance & Supply Chain. Reporting into this position are the Senior Manager - Financial Transactions; Director - Accounting & Fin Controls, and Director - US R&D Accounting. Engages in close collaboration with all areas within NNI Finance including, Financial Transaction Services and Financial Planning & Analysis. Also interacts and consults with Corporate Finance, Corporate Accounting, external auditors (PWC), Finance Managers of North American Affiliates on accounting and reporting matters. On a daily basis interacts, consults with and advises various NNI stakeholders on financial, contractual, employee benefits and internal control related matters with heavy interface with senior management. Close interaction with the CVP of Corporate Accounting Services in Novo Nordisk's Denmark HQ.

 

Essential Functions

  • Oversees the financial closing process and the consistent delivery of timely and accurate reporting of results internally within Novo Nordisk, to external agencies as required
  • Ensures that all relevant transactional processes can consistently produce accurate information in support of financial reporting in accordance with IFRS, US GAAP and Novo Nordisk corporate policy
  • Responsible for establishing a strong and sustainable environment of internal control compliant with Sarbanes Oxley Sec 404 requirements
  • Manage/reduce the Company’s exposure to fraud risk and routinely evaluate business processes and external supplier oversight to ensure the Company’s interest and value proposition is appropriately supported
  • Responsible for the development of accounting policy and procedures. Provides input to Corporate Finance and Accounting on material unique technical financial reporting issues relevant to the US operation
  • Ensures a strong emphasis on appropriate revenue recognition and other complex accounting treatment areas
  • Prepares and presents financial statements and other materials as requested for Board of Directors meetings for NNI and US Holding Companies
  • Provides input and influence concerning Novo Nordisk global systems as well as NNI system initiatives that impact financial control and reporting of results
  • Responsible for coordination and completion of the annual audit with independent public accounting firm (PWC). Fosters a relationship with PWC based on strong technical acumen, integrity and professionalism
  • Reviews and comments on all key contracts of the organization. Collaborates with Legal and Line of Business on deals of financial significance providing feedback concerning financial, operational and internal accounting control consequences
  • Maintain strong awareness of the application of tax rules and ensure close collaboration with NNI Tax dept. on relevant items
  • Supports North American Affiliates in the application of technical accounting and internal controls issues, and supports the coordination of Service Level Agreements with NNI internal stakeholders and related entities
  • Ensures that data in finance systems is structured to deliver relevant level of transparency in an effective and efficient way
  • Sponsor, contribute to and drive projects that enhance Finance Department and overall Company performance
  • Member of Retirement Committee providing input and oversight to Plan administration. Oversees financial reporting for employee benefit plans and serves as an advisor to Human Resources on other employee benefit matters concerning technical financial, administrative and compliance perspectives
  • Member of Financial Compliance Committee providing input and oversight of financial compliance activities and further development hereof

 

Physical Requirements

This is a hybrid role in Plainsboro, NJ.

The role may require up to 20% travel, including occasional international travel.

 

Development Of People

Supervisory. Ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process. Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree and CPA required
  • At least ten years’ experience in financial management and reporting with significant experience/exposure to public accounting and auditing
  • Skilled in analytical methods and techniques
  • Strong knowledge of technical accounting rules with ability to interpret and articulate same to Senior Management and staff
  • Experienced working within a large-scale ERP environment and with the implementation of new systems and processes
  • At least three years’ pharmaceutical industry experience required
  • At least five years supervisory experience required
