The Position
The Portfolio Operations Specialist will play a pivotal role in overseeing the Novo Nordisk's product portfolio across its lifecycle and ensuring central management for the relevant therapy area. This role is responsible for developing and executing strategies to optimize the performance of products from launch through maturity and Loss of Exclusivity (LOEs), ensuring alignment with business objectives and market dynamics.
Relationship
Reports into the Portfolio Operations Strategist, within the Commercial Portfolio, Pipeline and BD&L team. Collaborates closely with cross-functional teams, including therapy area marketing, market access (MAPA) and clinical / medical (CMR) teams to ensure alignment of lifecycle management strategies with broader organizational goals and objectives. Facilitate communication and knowledge sharing across departments to drive cross-functional collaboration and synergy.
Essential Functions
- Portfolio Overview: Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the company's therapy area product portfolio and understand each product’s current market positioning, competitive landscape, revenue potential, and strategic importance to the organization
- Portfolio Strategy Development: Develop and implement strategic plans for products across their lifecycle, including launches, mature brands, and products approaching loss of exclusivity (LOE). Collaborate with cross-functional teams to refine product positioning, pricing strategies, and lifecycle management tactics
- Lifecycle Management Strategy: Lead the development of comprehensive lifecycle management plans for each product in the therapy area portfolio, considering factors such as product launches, patent expirations, and market dynamics
- Portfolio Optimization: Identify opportunities for portfolio optimization and value enhancement through lifecycle extension strategies, product line extensions, label expansions, reformulations, acquisitions or strategic partnerships. Conduct scenario analyses and risk assessments to inform decision-making and prioritize initiatives
- Risk Management: Proactively identify and mitigate risks associated with product lifecycle management, including regulatory challenges, patent cliffs, supply chain disruptions, and market dynamics. Develop contingency plans and risk mitigation strategies to safeguard the portfolio's performance and long-term viability
- Loss of Exclusivity (LOE) Management: Anticipate and plan for upcoming LOEs, including the development of strategies to mitigate the impact of generic competition on revenue and market share. Evaluate opportunities for lifecycle management strategies, such as product differentiation, indication expansion, or lifecycle extension
- Centralized Portfolio Management: Establish centralized management processes and frameworks to streamline portfolio oversight and decision-making. Coordinate cross-functional collaboration among commercial teams, medical affairs, regulatory affairs, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment with portfolio strategies. Serve as a primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on matters related to portfolio lifecycle management
- Resource Allocation & Optimization: Collaborate with therapy areas and other cross functional teams to assess resource needs and requests and provide insight driven recommendations for how to optimize using allocation models
- Performance Monitoring and Optimization: Monitor the performance of products within the portfolio, tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) such as sales, market share, and profitability. Identify areas for optimization and develop recommendations for portfolio adjustments, resource reallocation, or strategic initiatives to maximize portfolio value
Physical Requirements
Approximately 20-30 % overnight travel.
Qualifications
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred
- 10+ years of experience in commercial strategy, portfolio management, lifecycle planning or related functions
- Strong understanding of pharmaceutical industry, including launch strategies, patent expirations, and market access considerations
- Proven track record of developing and implementing successful lifecycle management strategies for pharmaceutical products across various therapeutic areas
- Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data sets, identify trends, and draw actionable insights to drive decision-making
- Strong project management abilities, with experience leading cross-functional teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
- Strategic mindset, with the ability to think critically, anticipate future trends, and develop innovative solutions to address challenges and capitalize on opportunities in a dynamic market environment
