The Position
Provides litigation support to the legal staff with a primary focus on intellectual property (IP) disputes, while also supporting other complex litigation matters as needed. This role partners closely with in-house counsel, outside counsel, and business stakeholders to drive efficient, high-quality matter execution, from early case assessment and other pre-litigation preparation, through trial and post-judgment activities.
Relationships
Reports to Director, Legal Strategy & Solutions. Assists all litigation attorneys in the Legal Department in the delivery of legal services. Interacts with individuals in other USO departments, Corporate Intellectual Property (Denmark), Global Litigation (Denmark), and affiliate companies. Also interacts with outside law firms, government agencies, and business entities. May interact directly with external stakeholders including suppliers, clinical trial sites, vendors, etc.
Essential Functions
- Provides support to litigation attorneys, from pre-litigation investigation through completion of a matter (including any appeals). Primarily focused on both plaintiff- and defendant-side IP litigation
- Coordinates and maintains matter files; manages case calendars, deadlines, and filings; tracks outside counsel deliverables, status updates, and budget milestones
- Supports fact development, including maintaining witness/contact lists, chronologies, key issue trackers, and document indexes
- Coordinates collection, organization and production of documents (and other items) with outside counsel, ensuring adherence to discovery protocols & timely delivery of discovery; analyzes documents for potential discovery
- Drafts and assists in the implementation of legal holds; interacts and collaborates with members of the Legal Operations, eDiscovery, and Information Governance Team
- Participates in meetings with line of business as requested for litigation and investigation matters
- Identifies appropriate laws, judicial decisions, and legal arguments that are relevant to assigned matters
- On own initiative, follows up on outstanding issues and keeps attorneys informed of status
- Prepares, reviews, and modifies standard and complex agreements, including consulting agreements, service agreements, confidentiality agreements and grant agreements
- Coordinates witness and party depositions; assists with managing exhibits; supports preparation of fact and expert witnesses
- Regularly handles highly confidential matters with discretion and judgment
- Assists with trial preparation as requested, including witness and exhibit preparation and coordination, and courtroom support
- Researches statutes, regulations and case law and prepares informative material for general use by the attorneys
- Participates in Litigation Strategy Group meetings where appropriate, and assists in coordinating, drafting, editing and uploading slides for key meetings including Litigation Strategy Group, EVP Steering Group, Audit Committee, Disclosure Committee, Legal Risk Review and other relevant meetings
Physical Requirements
0-10% overnight travel required.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor 's Degree required; relevant experience may be substituted for degree where appropriate
- A minimum of 8 years of paralegal experience or other relevant experience required, preferably including some IP experience (with basic patent and Hatch-Waxman/BPCIA knowledge a plus)
- At least 3 years of pharmaceutical industry experience preferred
- A Paralegal Certification required (or the ability to obtain such certification within 1 year of hire)
- Excellent organizational, planning and follow-through skills
- Must be a self-starter; flexible; customer-focused; and have a professional demeanor
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint; comfortable working in matter management and eDiscovery platforms
- Strong analytical, research, and organizational skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
The base compensation range for this position is $83,400 to $150,200. Base compensation is determined based on a number of factors. This position is also eligible for a company bonus based on individual and company performance.
Novo Nordisk offers long-term incentive compensation and or company vehicles depending on the position's level or other company factors.
