The Position

The head of eDiscovery and Legal Data Management will drive the development, implementation, operation, and management of NNI Legals' eDiscovery and data management functions. The primary responsibilities of the role is developing, implementing, and enforcing legally compliant, defensible and efficient eDiscovery and data management program, including strategy, technology, and documentation. The role will be the direct manager of other positions related to eDiscovery and Data Management.

 

Relationships

This position reports to the Head of Legal Strategy & Operations. The position works in close collaboration with the Legal Department, IT, HR, Ethics & Compliance, and records management stakeholders, and all other relevant functional areas. The role also partners closely with legal and related functions across Novo Nordisk globally. The role is a people manager, responsible for direct reports and supervising work performed by Novo Nordisk colleagues. The role also manages external relationships with vendors specific to eDiscovery, and data management.

 

Essential Functions

  • Advance the company’s goals of risk mitigation, cost containment and transparency, and increased operational efficiency by recommending, designing, and driving the adoption of policies and processes for eDiscovery, legal data management, and external supplier management
  • Identify, prioritize, ¬and oversee eDiscovery & Data Management projects and manage day-to-day operations to achieve policy and process objectives
  • Provide advice and counsel to litigation and investigations case teams concerning best practices for identification, preservation, collection, processing, review / analysis, and production of hard copy and electronically stored information
  • Manage relationships with Novo Nordisk eDiscovery suppliers and drive adoption of efficient and legally defensible workflows
  • Oversee implementation of enhanced legal hold and eDiscovery workflow management system and lead efforts to reengineer related business processes and redefine roles and responsibilities, as appropriate
  • Serve as subject matter expert and internal consultant to ensure retention, legal hold, and disposition are applied to electronic and paper repositories in a legally defensible, cost efficient manner
  • Promote awareness and proactively drive the adoption of sound data management practices and enhance partnership with Line of Business
  • Partner with other key stakeholders in Novo Nordisk’s broader legal operations function, including those responsible for internal resource management, knowledge management, strategic oversight of the Legal department’s budget, and contracting operations
  • Drive collaboration with key information management and finance stakeholders in developing and implementing the function
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technological solutions, trends, and developments; make recommendations and establish business cases concerning adoption of new technologies and streamlining business processes; and manage implementation and go-forward support of solutions to ensure operational excellence
  • Develop / maintain industry relationships and actively participate in relevant industry groups to facilitate benchmarking and ensure strong subject matter knowledge base
  • Measure and monitor initiatives to ensure stated goals are achieved and provide meaningful reporting for leadership and key stakeholders
  • Participate in ongoing review and assessment of the function to ensure continuous process improvement
  • Modify and implement policies and processes where required to ensure ongoing legal compliance and efficiency

 

Physical Requirements

0-10% overnight travel required.

 

Development of People

Ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process.

 

Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree required.  Advanced Degree or other relevant coursework preferred
  • At least 10 years’ relevant industry experience required
  • Prior in-house experience in the life sciences industry strongly preferred
  • People management experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to quickly build business acumen and relationships required to develop the function and collaborate effectively with key stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience taking a thoughtful approach to change management in an evolving and dynamic environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of eDiscovery, data management, information technology, and electronic information management principles, solutions, and best practices required
  • Experience with legal technology, business intelligence / dashboarding / data analytics tools strongly preferred
  • Experience designing, documenting, and executing processes and procedures in highly-regulated industry strongly preferred
  • Self-motivated and able to set strategy, balance competing priorities, and work both independently and in a team environment
