The Position

To support the Director of U.S. Tax Operations in leading and managing tax operations, tax compliance, tax risk and indirect taxes for Novo Nordisk Inc. (NNI), its North American affiliates and Novo Nordisk with focused efforts to achieve our Corporate Tax Strategy – to take a sustainable approach to taxes which is commercially driven, responsible and transparent. Responsibilities include all facets of tax operations including expert internal and external Corporate tax reporting, proactive business advisement, creating and advancing tax digitalization agenda, tax strategy implementation, tax risk assessment and mitigation, optimizing tax incentives, and providing leadership to the Tax Operations team in order to accomplish these imperatives. Relationships

Reports to Director of U.S. Tax Operations. Member of NNI Finance & Operations – Finance and Supply Chain, and Global Tax based in Denmark aka Corporate Tax. Continual interaction and collaboration with Corporate Tax, Finance groups and Line of Business personnel at NNI and all U.S. affiliates including commercial, research, corporate development, and manufacturing sites. Serves as a primary point of contact for U.S. Tax Operations for all internal and external commercial stakeholders including tax and financial auditors.  Acts as liaison with outside tax advisors.  Outside advisors may support and report into this position. Position leads with indirect line authority.

 

Essential Functions

  • Tax Operations (Commercial):
    • Assist Director of U.S. Tax Operations as point of contact for NNI and all U.S. commercial affiliates. As part, build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders. Also create and communicate an annual commercial engagement plan with stakeholders to optimize value creation
    • Understand the Novo Nordisk value chain, e.g., corporate development, research, clinical development, manufacturing and commercial operations to be in optimal position to provide tax advice to stakeholders independently and with Director and U.S. Tax Operations team
    • Assist Director of U.S. Tax Operations to ensure U.S. Federal and State audits are appropriately managed and shared with Corporate tax via biannual reporting and preparation of tax risk memos for key risks
    • Report tax advice via conversation, presentation and written communication within Tax team and with relevant stakeholders at commercial affiliates and beyond
    • Optimize all internal and external resources and processes to ensure that all actions required to provide deliverables are properly planned, executed, and delivered
  • Corporate Development Integration:
    • Provide necessary insight to the U.S. Tax Strategy team as required
    • Engage and align with U.S. Tax Strategy team to ensure seamless integration of tax planning and corporate development opportunities including proper U.S. Federal and State tax return disclosures of all such initiatives
    • Support internal and external stakeholders including NNI and Corporate Financial Accounting teams to enable proper financial reporting of tax acquisitions, structurings and restructurings
    • Ensure proper tax reporting of all tax planning and business development initiatives including discussions with internal and external auditors
  • Consolidation:
    • Deliver a timely, complete and accurate consolidated Federal U.S. Corporation Income Tax return, Form 1120 to Director of U.S. Tax Operations for review on an annual basis
    • Review U.S. State combined, unitary and consolidated external tax reporting to ensure alignment with U.S. Federal reporting with regard to form - disclosures and substance – technical correctness
    • Maintain tax earnings and profit “E & P” and tax basis for all U.S. legal entities. As part support Corporate Treasury by providing timely and relevant forecasts of E&P for annual dividend payments and corporate structuring changes
    • Assist Tax Strategy team by providing actual and forecasted views of tax data in format requested, e.g., combined, unitary, consolidated and by segment
    • Communication of combined, unitary, consolidated and segment tax views to Corporate Tax to ensure alignment, as required or requested
    • Utilize tax technology to streamline all related internal and external reporting with a focus on efficiency and enable the strategic value of Tax Operations for the organizations
  • Corporate Tax Reporting:
    • Assist Director of U.S. Tax Operations in ensuring all U.S. Corporate Federal and State including Puerto Rico direct and indirect external tax compliance are completed in a timely, complete and accurate manner with proper tax payments made
    • Support Director of U.S. Tax Operations in ensuring all U.S. Corporate tax financial reporting on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis inclusive of internal requirements and interaction with internal and external financial auditors. Ensure proper current and deferred income tax expense, effective tax rate and income tax balance sheet reporting as well as well-documented and effective internal controls over tax processes in compliance with Sarbanes Oxley (Sarbox) requirements
    • Assist with timely delivery of tax forecasts and effective tax rate analysis when required inclusive of required submissions to Corporate Tax
    • Determine and ensure proper and optimal U.S Federal tax accounting methods with annual reevaluation and maintenance of tax earnings and profit and taxes basis for all U.S. legal entities
    • Oversight of Indirect Taxes for U.S. Commercial Operations, e.g., sales, use property, unclaimed property and all business tax filings including VAT refund claim

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree is required in a relevant major, preferably Economics, Business Administration Accounting or Finance. CPA license, Masters in Tax or JD with LLM in Taxation preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in public accounting and/or multinational corporate tax department with a Bachelor's degree OR 8 years of experience with Masters.  CPA can be considered in lieu of 1 year of experience.
  • Supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to generate team engagement, collaboration, development, credibility and commitment strongly preferred
  • At least 3 years pharmaceutical industry experience preferred
  • Strong technical knowledge with experience covering a broad range of complex U.S. Federal, State and International tax matters
  • Extensive experience with tax operations, tax compliance, tax accounting, financial reporting, tax audits and controversy, tax advisement and internal and external stakeholder management
  • Exceptional business communication skills to effectively relate complex tax issues to senior leadership and demonstrated ability to influence optimal tax outcomes
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate extensively with key business partners and stakeholders
  • Ability to organize, effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced matrix environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office. SAP, OneSource or similar experience preferred
  • Self-started, ability to lead and motivate people
