About the department
In Cell Therapy R&D, our mission is to improve the lives of patients suffering from serious chronic diseases through innovative stem cell-based therapies. We want to be an industry leader in this rapidly developing area, which has the potential to address unmet medical needs and even cure serious chronic diseases. As a dedicated Transformational Research Unit (TRU) since late 2018, we have a high level of independence, agility and flexibility. This means we can combine the speed and agility of a small biotech with the capabilities of a major pharma company. We cover the full pharmaceutical value chain, from research to commercial, including a GMP manufacturing site in Fremont, working in close collaboration with leading international scientists and colleagues across Novo Nordisk. Novo Nordisk has been active in stem cell research for over 20 years in type 1 diabetes. Our portfolio has since expanded to many disease areas and indications, all working towards maturing and expanding our platform and capabilities.

The Cell Therapy Development area is part of Cell Therapy R&D and encompasses an organization of approximately 22 professionals spread across several locations and time zones. Located at our Maaloev site in Denmark, the team collaborates closely with the larger Novo Nordisk Development organization, including the newly formed US-based “East Coast Hub” and our commercial partners in Rare Disease. The department is known for its collaborative and innovative approach to drug development, and we are committed to making a difference in the lives of patients.
