The Position
As our Software Engineer your role will be focused on designing and implementing software applications for scientific computing and working closely with scientists to enable innovation. You will present strong collaboration skills to facilitate bridging between local and global teams. You will define, in collaboration with department head, the software strategy for bridging the In-Vitro needs in the Novo Nordisk Research Centre in Oxford and across the Target Discovery Engine (TDE) as well as facilitate collaboration and bridge to global organization and products teams.
A big part of the role is to share knowledge of enterprise standards for security, automation, and monitoring, as well as to pay strict attention to code quality and having strong understanding of software architecture, and the ability to contribute to its foundation. Other aspects of the role will include candidate’s working knowledge and engagement in:
• Automation/monitoring tools (e.g., AWS Code Pipeline, Azure DevOps)
• Virtual environments and package manager (Docker, venv, pip, npm)
• GitOps and DevOps best-practices such as releases, reviews, branching policies, etc.
• Programming in at least one general-purpose programming language (e.g., Python, Typescript, CS, Java, Go)
• Programming in at least one scripting language (e.g.: shell)
This is a hybrid role, with 2-3 days in the office in London, King’s Cross.
Qualifications
We are looking for a true team player with strong communication skills and a pro-active mindset. They will hold university degree, preferably within a quantitative field, together with at least a few years of working experience in a similar role, and familiarity with software design and implementation. Proven experience of successful cooperation with end users and other key stakeholders are essential to be successful in this role. It is expected that the candidate is fluent in software applications in Python, Typescript, CS or frameworks, and have developed, maintained, and extended a variety of different purpose software applications.
Moreover, we expect our candidates to show us the following experience in:
• Integrating on-prem and cloud applications and in supporting IT infrastructure in lab spaces.
• Relational databases and nosql (setup, initialisation, table design, performance optimization).
• Architectures like Monolithic, Microservices, Event-Driven, Serverless, Layered
• Methodologies such as BDD, TDD, Agile.
• Debugging setups in ides such as vscode and automated setups for documentation publishing.
• Designing, implementing, and maintaining software applications for scientific computing.
• Working knowledge of Web framework (e.g. React, Django, Angular) would be an advantage.
About the Department
The position is embedded in our UK Digita, Data & IT department in Research & Development (DDIT-R&ED). located in the heart of London and the University of Oxford medical campus. The department currently consists of 12 Software Engineers and Data specialists and is building up additional capabilities and capacity.
