The Position

The IT Engineer III - Labs will be responsible for ensuring operations of existing local laboratory IT infrastructure as well as pursuing novel solutions that allow the research teams on site to work with data driven sciences. Major tasks will include implementing and maintaining existing laboratory systems and instruments, enabling solutions for capturing data from laboratory instruments and servers, ensuring local and cloud storage capacity for data, ensuring access to relevant cloud computing data science tools, as well as securing network performance for data capture and analysis locally and globally.

 

The IT Engineer III – Labs will therefore be working closely with research and operations staff in Lexington as well as with the Digital, Data and IT (DDIT) organization, DDIT Research and Early Development (DDIT RED) and coordinating with colleagues in NN global research hubs and at multiple US locations.

 

Relationships

This position reports to the Lab IT lead in Lexington and will collaborate closely with Boston Hub IT team.

 

Additional internal stakeholders include IT applications teams from Novo Nordisk (NN), IT security teams from NN; Legal, audit and compliance representatives from NN; NNI IT group for infrastructure, network, security, application, and user related activities.

 

External stakeholders include service providers for support of scientific instruments and systems.

 

Essential Functions

  • Provides technology support and service
    • Exhibits extensive knowledge of IT systems, applications, cloud computing and/or networks, and utilizes this knowledge to develop training for other technical supporters
    • Serves as a role model to others for translating complex and technical information
  • Develops and maintains systems, applications and infrastructure:
    • Follows IT security best practices, policies and procedures in support of IT security programs
    • Analyzes user requirements, develops and implements functional specifications and configurations for complex systems, and ensures requirements are met
    • Follows best practices within functional area to enhance IT solutions and improve processes and results
    • Follows recommendations and improvements to system and process performance and functionality
    • Monitors and manages overall system and recommends solutions to hardware or software problems and issues
  • Infrastructure support:
    • Maintains IT systems and performs regular proactive maintenance and system updates
  • Scientific it and cloud computing infrastructure support:
    • Provides systems integration, installation, licensing, version management, and basic troubleshooting; manages incident resolution when escalation of issues to software vendors is required
  • Analyze and fulfills business needs:
    • Fosters and develops an environment of open and honest communication to build strong partnerships and positive perception of IT
    • Leverages in-depth knowledge of business functions, business processes and key objectives to develop solutions aligned with business needs
    • Engages stakeholders to discuss the effectiveness of solutions and capabilities, and their impact on business strategies and performance
  • Builds relationships and influences key stakeholders:
    • Facilitates cross-functional collaboration among necessary stakeholders when making decisions and developing strategic plans

 

Physical Requirements

0-10% overnight travel required.

 

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma, minimum of 7+ years relevant experience required. A Bachelor’s degree with 4+ years and Master’s degree with 2+ years relevant experience can be considered
  • Relevant experience includes:
    • Excellent troubleshooting skills with ability to create solutions
    • Solid understanding of PC based hardware, Microsoft Windows Servers, Active Directory, Virtual Machines
    • Solid understanding of network standards and protocols, wireless networks, VLANs, firewalls
    • Solid understanding of relational databases (e.g. MSSQL/Oracle)
    • The ability to learn new applications and apply knowledge in troubleshooting situations
    • Understanding of remote support and help desk ticketing systems
  • Preferred experience includes:
    • Experience in a biotechnology, life sciences, or clinical IT systems analyst or computer programmer role
    • Experience with IT structures in a laboratory-based setting and experience supporting research staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, in teams, and with external collaboration partners on moderate to high complexity tasks
  • Customer minded problem-solving mindset with a keen interest in identifying and problem solve how to best enable and increase science and operational performance through IT
  • Ability to drive stakeholder discussions, conclusions, and decisions
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Detail oriented with strong documentation skills
  • Prioritizes and keep focus on key priorities
