UK Employment Tax Manager

Your impact begins here

As UK Employment Tax Manager, you will lead UK employment tax for our UK entities, including NNL and NNRD UK, and be the main contact for colleagues and HMRC. You will make sure PAYE, NIC and HMRC reporting are accurate, and that the controls and governance behind them stand up to scrutiny. Your guidance on legislation and HMRC policy helps Payroll,  Local People & Organisation and Finance act with confidence, so people are paid correctly and the business stays compliant.

What you’ll bring

You combine deep UK employment tax expertise with the judgement to turn complex rules into clear, practical action.

•            Minimum 5 years of proven UK employment tax experience, gained in consultancy (ideally Big 4) or a large global multinational organisation.

•            ATT (Association of Tax Technicians) or CTA (Chartered Tax Advisor) qualification.

•            HMRC-facing experience, including handling queries and enquiries, and managing deadlines and escalations.

•            Experience of building and maintaining employment tax controls, audit trails, reconciliations and governance outputs, such as SAO evidence packs, RAG/SAO reporting and risk registers.

•            Excellent written and verbal communication, adapted to different audiences, and a genuine willingness to collaborate.

•            Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to influence at all levels.

•            A high level of attention to detail and proven organisational skills.

•            The ability to navigate ambiguity, manage competing priorities and deliver under pressure, with a proactive and practical approach to fixing problems.

Useful, but not essential:

•            Knowledge of European employment tax.

•            Hands-on experience of overseeing an outsourced payroll model riving service performance and ensuring contractual and operational compliance.

•            Experience managing UK benefits administration and ensuring correct tax treatment.

•            Experience delivering new processes, remediation plans and root-cause fixes, ideally in a complex or international environment.

•            A solid understanding of accounting principles, including general ledger processes.

What you’ll do

You will own UK employment tax compliance from payroll processing through to governance, reporting and HMRC engagement.

•            Act as the Employment Tax Accountable Person: prepare the UK legal entities’ employment tax RAG status and Senior Accounting Officer (SAO) report with supporting evidence, maintain the employment tax risk register, and escalate critical risks to the SAO straight away.

•            Lead HMRC enquiries, reviews and audits, coordinating stakeholders and advisers, and driving remedial actions with clear owners and deadlines.

•            Run periodic health checks and keep payroll controls and audit trails strong, so risks, control gaps and process improvements are found early.

•            Keep UK employment tax policies, guidance and SOPs current, and turn legislative and HMRC changes into clear requirements for the payroll provider (RSC).

•            Own or oversee timely, accurate filings and statutory submissions, including RTI, PSA/P11D, ERS, Short Term Business Visitor and director emoluments reporting.

•            Provide expert guidance on benefits, salary sacrifice (including OpRA), pensions, termination payments, IR35, mobility and expenses, and support new tax initiatives and payroll enhancement projects.

Who you’ll work with

You will join Regional Service Centre in People Services where colleagues work across markets to serve people around the world and help improve health at scale. In this role, that means giving the UK businesses a tax and payroll foundation they can rely on.

Your closest partners will be the payroll team, the local People & Organisation team and the HR business partner (HRBP), Finance and Global Mobility. You will also work with external advisers such as EY, and you will be the main point of contact for HMRC. You will report to the Payroll, Time & Benefits Manager.

You will bring these groups together around clear roles and responsibilities, so issues are investigated, explained and resolved quickly, and decisions move forward with clarity.

What you can expect here

You will be trusted to own a high-stakes area of compliance, with clear performance expectations and the space to make your voice heard on how we manage employment tax risk. You will work across Payroll, People & Organization, Finance and Global Mobility, building new perspectives on the business and growing together with colleagues on the job and through relevant learning offerings.
