In the team, you are to exercise approval authority regarding contracts, communication materials and other liable matters as well as good judgment and flexibility while ensuring alignment within Legal & Compliance Department and with other local/global stakeholders.

 

The position
As our Legal, Ethics & Compliance Counsel, you are expected to utilize expertise on legal and ethics & compliance, enable business in Japan to achieve growth initiatives while defending the company from major legal, compliance, and reputational risks.
The role responsibilities are as follows but not limited to:

  • In the role of Business Partnering at Novo Nordisk Japan, the individual is responsible for supporting business leaders in making informed decisions and achieving growth objectives across various business functions. This includes providing legal and compliance support in areas such as contract law, intellectual property, corporate law, data protection, pharma regulation, and more. The focus is on intelligent risk-taking while defending the company from legal, compliance, and reputational risks. The role involves addressing business challenges, coordinating with global stakeholders, and ensuring comprehensive coverage of legal and compliance aspects for the business.
  • Contracting: Advising on, drafting, reviewing, and approving, and negotiating on various types of contracts (e.g., clinical trial, post market study, investigator sponsored study, joint research, wholesaler and distribution, employment, procurement, alliance and partnerships) to enable business leaders to achieve growth initiatives while defending the company from major legal, compliance, and reputational risks.
  • Compliance investigation: Lead and conduct investigations on compliance related allegations or concerns including (i) case reporting through Compliance Hotline system, (ii) interviewing, (iii) investigation memo drafting and (iv) informing and managing global stakeholders. 
  • Process implementation and ownership: Plan, lead, and execute the implementation of the requirements of local regulations and Novo Nordisk’s global policies through coordination with local and global stakeholders.
  • Process optimization: Identify opportunities for optimization of existing processes and policies, as well as plan, lead, and execute optimization projects (digitization, automation, and simplification) to achieve more simplicity and agility for both Legal & Compliance team and business leaders, while maintaining required level of control.  Also, cultivating compliance culture, live the value of integrity, and be able to nurture such mindset among all employees to create the same environment.

 
Qualifications

  • Have a bachelor’s degree. Law degree is preferred.
  • Lawyer qualification in Japan (弁護士) and minimum of 3 years of experience at law firm, or legal division in a company is required.
  • Proficiency in Japanese and English (written & verbal) is essential.
  • A legal mindset, combined with clear and logical communication, demonstrates a proactive attitude and behavior.
  • Curiosity in healthcare industry and learning and personal development.
