About the department
The Rare Disease (RareD) Marketing Department at Novo Nordisk Japan (NNPL) is at the forefront of driving impactful strategies for patients with rare diseases. Based in Tokyo, Japan, our team is dedicated to fostering innovation and collaboration in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The role will report directly to Senior Director, Head of RareD Marketing.
The position
The Director, Rare Endocrine Disorders (RED) Marketing is a key role within Rare Disease Marketing with leadership of the growth hormone portfolio. He/she is responsible for development of brand strategy to deliver on financial goals. The role will partner effectively with Sales, Medical, Commercial Excellence, and other relevant internal functions on insight generation as well as tactical execution of brand plans. He/she will be responsible for coaching and development of marketing managers as direct reports.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Therapeutic area (TA) leadership: Serve as a cross-functional leader responsible for achieving strategic and financial goals for the TA by understanding market trends, monitoring brand performance, uncovering key drivers and barriers, and developing deep customer insights to anticipate market evolution and inform NNPL’s strategy.
- Cross-functional strategy development in TA: Collaborate with Sales, Medical, and other internal functions to identify and prioritize key issues and opportunities, localize cross-functional strategic imperatives and key success factors in alignment with the global strategy to achieve brand objectives, and act as a champion to ensure the entire organization is unified behind the strategy.
- Tactical marketing execution in TA: Drive tactical marketing execution, including promotional material development, non-personal promotion, and key programs to maximize impact; lead the development and execution of Headquarter (HQ)-driven peer-to-peer speaker programs; and provide clear guidance to Sales teams on brand execution, including positioning, targeting, messaging, and effective resource utilization.
- Stakeholder engagement and partnerships: Proactively partner with internal NNPL (Japan) stakeholders across functions including Sales, Medical, Commercial Excellence, R&D, Supply Chain, and Finance; collaborate with Global and International Operations stakeholders to share Japan-specific perspectives, learnings, and best practices; and develop strong relationships with external stakeholders, including KOLs and HCP associations, in partnership with Sales and Medical.
- Coaching and development of direct reports as first-line manager: Provide ongoing coaching to team members to ensure effective delivery of annual goals, engage direct reports in long-term development discussions to support their continuous growth, and collaborate with other leaders on talent management and succession planning.
Qualifications
- At least 10 years of progressive commercial experience in the pharmaceutical industry and must have previous direct people management and/or indirect team leadership experience
- Experience as a brand leader for in-line product(s) in rare disease and/or specialty care
- End-to-end expertise in marketing from strategy development to tactical execution
- Experience leading and/or supporting a successful product launch in the rare disease space, and experience in field sales and additional commercial roles (e.g., training, sales planning, etc.)
- Bachelor’s degree in science, business, or other relevant fields. Advanced degree preferred (e.g., MBA). Fluency in Japanese, proficiency in English.
