Senior Software Engineer - Industrial Automation & Connectivity
Ballerup, Capital Region of Denmark, DK
Laboratory & PAT Solutions, Connectivity team
Ballerup, Denmark
Take ownership of a Python-based automation platform that keeps world-class pharmaceutical manufacturing running – and shape the engineering practices behind it.
Your new role
Join our agile Connectivity team and take architectural ownership of business-critical applications (LIMS) used in industrial and pharmaceutical environments. This is a hands-on technical role where you'll design, build, and evolve our Python-based automation platform – working across software architecture, industrial automation, DevOps, IT/OT integration, and cybersecurity, and driving technical decisions from concept through deployment.
Day-to-day your tasks will include:
- Architecting, designing, developing, and maintaining Python-based applications with a focus on scalability, reliability, maintainability, and security, and designing RESTful APIs that seamlessly integrate enterprise and manufacturing systems
- Developing and maintaining Ignition SCADA applications supporting manufacturing and process automation
- Leading the evolution of our software engineering platform, including driving the migration from Azure DevOps to GitHub and GitHub Actions, and building modern CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevOps practices
- Ensuring solutions comply with GxP requirements and support software validation in accordance with GAMP 5, collaborating closely with infrastructure and cybersecurity teams on Novo Nordisk IT/OT standards and GxP IT/OT Cybersecurity Assessments
- Driving software architecture decisions and establishing engineering standards, troubleshooting and optimising applications across the full technology stack
- Mentoring and supporting fellow engineers through technical leadership, knowledge sharing, and code reviews
- Producing high-quality technical documentation, including architecture designs, operational procedures, validation documentation, and deployment guidelines
Your new department
In Enterprise IT & Quality, you will be part of a business area that drives impact across the full Novo Nordisk value chain. We strive to stay close to our stakeholders in the business to ensure we deliver on their needs, helping reach millions of people living with serious chronic diseases. Our focus is on being at the forefront within our three areas; ensuring the highest quality for patients, being a trusted tech leader and an environmentally responsible business.
You'll join a small, agile Connectivity team responsible for designing and delivering software solutions that connect industrial automation systems with enterprise applications (LIMS). We work closely with production, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and business stakeholders, giving every team member significant ownership and influence over the technical decisions that shape our platform.
Your skills & qualifications
You're a highly experienced software engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and taking ownership of solutions from architecture through deployment. You combine deep technical expertise with a collaborative mindset and thrive in agile teams where quality, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing are valued. To succeed in this role, you'll bring:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related technical discipline, together with 10+ years of professional software development experience
- Good knowledge of LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) is a prerequisite
- Expert-level experience developing applications in Python, strong experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs, and hands-on experience with Ignition SCADA
- Proven experience integrating IT and OT systems within industrial environments, and developing software in regulated pharmaceutical, biotech, or life sciences settings
- Experience with Git, GitHub, GitHub Actions, and modern CI/CD practices (Azure DevOps experience is an advantage, particularly for supporting our migration), and a strong understanding of software architecture, secure software development, and DevOps principles
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and take technical ownership, coupled with strong communication and stakeholder management skills
Nice to have: experience with GAMP 5 validation methodologies, GxP IT/OT Cybersecurity Assessments, industrial networking and manufacturing execution environments, Docker/Kubernetes or cloud-native technologies, technical leadership or mentoring, and agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.
