As a Black Utilities Scientist in Chemistry, Manufacturing & Control (CMC) Pilots Engineering, you will play a key role in designing and delivering robust, compliant black utility solutions across complex pilot projects. Working closely with engineering, operations, and external partners, you will contribute directly to enabling reliable pilot production. Your new role
As a Black Utilities Scientist in CMC Pilots Engineering, you will contribute to the implementation of black utilities in several projects of varying size e.g. cooling/heating systems, wastewater, waste or compressed air. You will influence key engineering decisions and be part of setting the direction for black utility solutions in critical pilot projects.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Apply engineering and scientific judgement to support compliant and robust utility solutions.
- Contribute to the execution of black utility work packages in different engineering projects.
- Support activities related to selection, design, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover of utility systems
- Responsible for documentation, commissioning and handover of utility systems to operations.
- Ensure alignment with global standards and regulatory requirements
- Provide technical input and support to users and project colleagues across utilities and infrastructure.
- Participate in cross‑functional project teams (e.g. engineering, operations and external suppliers).
The role offers room for tailoring responsibilities depending on your experience and level of independence within black utilities. Projects vary in size and complexity, offering constant technical development and learning.
Your skills & qualifications
We are looking for a Scientist who brings solid engineering knowledge, practical utility experience and a collaborative mindset to project work in a regulated environment.
To succeed in this role, you have:
- A scientific or engineering background, such as an MSc (cand.scient.) or engineering degree.
- Proven experience with design of Black Utilities within pharma. Experience with Clean Utilities is considered an advantage.
- A structured approach to execution, documentation and compliance.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in project teams.
- Clear communication skills, enabling you to share technical insights with diverse stakeholders.

Your new department
You will join CMC Pilots Engineering, part of CMC Pilots within the CMC Development organisation. CMC Development's role in Novo Nordisk's value chain is to turn molecules into approved products in close cooperation with our colleagues Research & Development and Global Manufacturing & Supply.
CMC Pilots supports the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) for clinical trials and plays a critical role in enabling product development and ensuring smooth process transfer to commercial production.
The Engineering Project department consists of more than 80 colleagues and delivers complex investment and major projects that expand and modernise pilot capacity. The department works in a collaborative, project‑driven environment where engineering, quality and science are closely integrated to enable safe, compliant and reliable manufacturing.
